Thermoplastic road marking is a popular option for most individuals and companies. This is due to its versatility, durability, quick installation time and easy repairs. However, in order to get all these benefits from thermoplastic road line marking, there are certain things that must be taken into consideration.
The most important aspect of road markings is that they must be retroreflective. The minimum night-time visibility (retroreflectivity) (RL) for white and yellow road markings must be 100 mcd/m2/lx and 70 mcd/m2/lx respectively. There are also other important parameters to which road markings should conform, such as the day-time visibility (luminance) (Qd), color and skid resistance.
Thermoplastic road markings are becoming more and more commonly used due to the inherent advantages gained by their materials and their method of production we know how important it is to provide the best possible materials for all road marking needs.
Any worn line-markings that are not made of thermoplastic must be removed to ensure proper bonding between the thermoplastic marking and the road. In addition, any grease, oil, mud, dust, grass and loose gravel must be cleared off the road surface to ensure proper bonding.
Thermoplastic material is applied hot and cures on laying. It has good durability and is suitable for use on all roads. Cold plastic (2-component material) consists of two parts which are a pigmented resin base and a catalyst. The product cures by chemical activity. With cold plastic, you get a wear-resistant road marking with low dirt pick up. Paint is typically a low-cost marking and has been in widespread use since approximately the early 1950s.
Retro-reflectivity is only one measure of in-service performance and there are likely to be numerous factors that have contributed towards these (unofficial) condition figures. However, to limit further deterioration and to safeguard investments made in addressing the maintenance backlog it is necessary to understand the factors which influence the long term durability of thermoplastic road markings (TRMs).
For heavy use or hard to access areas consider using Preform Thermoplastic markings. Preform thermoplastics are formulated preformed pieces laid out and applied to the road surface through blow torch heat and will last up to five times longer than paint applications. Concrete areas need to be sealed prior to the application of thermoplastic. Direction Line Marking provide sealant service in the quotation.
Various research papers and other documents were reviewed and are listed in the references for this report. Our literature review has found limited available information that specifically deals with durability and in particular the premature wear-off of TRMs. This section discusses some of the key points that could be found in the available literature that addresses wear-off.
