The condition of the road surface is key to the successful application of thermoplastic road marking. To ensure that the thermoplastic markings properly bond with the surface of the road, it is vital that the road is clean. Any existing road markings, mud, oil, dust, grass, gravel or grease should be cleared from the road surface before work begins. You should also ensure that the road is completely dry. 

Thermoplastic is a plastic material made of a binder, pigments, filler, and glass beads. Hot-applied thermoplastic is prepared for road deposition in a melting apparatus where the
granular or block material is introduced and heated until it liquefies at temperatures exceeding
400F.

You should only apply thermoplastic road markings to a road surface which is at a temperature of 10°C and over. You can check the temperature of the road surface using either a non-contact infrared thermometer or a surface thermometer. Of available preform thermoplastic markings, Flametape is the only product that exhibits the same oil impervious qualities of hot-applied alkyd thermoplastic and is also pre-beaded. It is normally thermally-bonded to the pavement by preheating the substrate with a torch.

Failure to do so can compromise the bond between road making and the road. Providing that all necessary conditions are met concerning the nature of material and substrate. The binder is what makes the material tough, flexible, and creates the bond strength to adhere to the pavement surface while holding the other components together.

Often, the packaging material is designed to be part of the thermoplastic system and can be melted along. All the materials used in the road line marking, i.e., the thermoplastic, glass beads, primer, and sealer, must be certified. You should also retain samples of the thermoplastic road marking for future quality verification.
